Bindery Prep Policy

Bindery Prep Policy

updated Dec. 17, 2001

The following procedure is to aid in locating materials that have been sent to the bindery to be processed for binding. Unfortunately, budgetary constraints in combination with a high level of productivity on part of the cataloging staff do not allow the bindery person to send out all of the items destined to be bound upon receipt.

As those cataloged items sit in wait of bindery processing, there is no record of their current location. Anyone attempting to locate one of these items will be led to believe that it could be found in the appropriate stacks location when in fact it is awaiting binding.

In order to make locating these items more efficient and to prevent people from wasting their time searching the stacks for something that is not there, we have created a pseudo-patron card named “Law Lib Bindery Prep.” If all of the items sent for bindery processing are first checked-out to this user, the task of locating them will be greatly simplified.

As items are cataloged (or re-cataloged) and determined to be in need of binding, they should then be checked-out to “Law Lib Bindery Prep” to indicate that they are somewhere near the bindery person’s desk awaiting further processing. Although this may seem like a burdensome extra step at times, it will ultimately prove to be a worthwhile step that will save time and reduce frustration for many.
