LOCAL NOTES

This procedure documents our practice for adding notes that pertain only to our copy of a resource.  These notes are useful for our users and may also be helpful for interlibrary loan needs.

  • General notes:

Add a 500 note to the bibliographic record, identifying it as unique to our library by adding |5CSt-Law to the end of the note.

Examples:

Signed by the author.|5CSt-Law

Pages 5-10 supplied in photocopy by Yale Law Library.|5CSt-Law

Library’s copy lacks cover.|5CSt-Law

Tipped-in: portrait of George Sutherland.|5CSt-Law

Annotated by Clarke Butler Whittier, Stanford Law professor ca. 1897-1902, 1915-1937.|5CSt-Law

  • Supplement notes

Add |5CSt-Law when providing the end date for supplementation in the 525 field.

Example:

Kept up to date by pocket parts through 2004.|5CSt-Law  (See also Cataloging Procedures for Later Editions of Monograph Titles.)

  • Exception

Do not use a 500 note to:    indicate library binding idiosyncrasies:  Bound in 1 v.

indicate holdings: Library wanting v. 3
