From ESRI Libraries & GIS News, Fall 2008

Introducing ArcGIS Online Services - GIS Data Services

ArcGIS Online Services provides access to high-quality basemaps (street maps, imagery, topography) for use in ArcMap, ArcGIS Explorer, and Web applications. Hosted and maintained by ESRI, ArcGIS Online Services provides access to terabytes of data on demand, so there's no need to store and manage updates at your site. Standard services are available at no cost for noncommercial use, and premium services are available by subscription.

* Standard services include a world street map,
15-meter imagery for the world with 1-meter resolution for the United States, 90-meter elevation for the world with 30-meter elevation for the United States, and topographic maps from the National Geographic Society for the United States.

* Premium services include high-resolution imagery for the United States and content from Microsoft Virtual Earth services.

The ArcGIS Online Resource Center provides previews of both standard and premium services including metadata (resolution, accuracy, date, source). Free trials are available for premium services. Learn more.

Improved PDF Support in ArcGIS 9.3

ArcGIS 9.3 has improved functionality for exporting maps to Adobe PDF format. Feature attributes can now be included in exported PDFs and accessed by Adobe Reader users. ArcGIS 9.3 also adds support for the new geospatial capabilities in the PDF formats introduced in Adobe Acrobat 9 including support for coordinate readout, find x,y measurement, and markup.

For example, recipients of PDF map documents can now query and identify feature attributes, find and display a location on the map using x,y coordinates, and measure features directly on the map. Some features require the Adobe Reader 9 or Acrobat 9 Pro or higher. Learn more.

All Landsat Data to Be Available at No Cost

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is pursuing an aggressive schedule to provide users with electronic access to any Landsat scene held in the USGS-managed national archive of global scenes dating back to Landsat 1, which was launched in 1972, by February 2009. Currently, newly acquired Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) data covering North America and Africa is already distributed by the USGS over the Internet at no charge, with plans for the full archive of historic Landsat 7 ETM+ data to be available for selection and downloading by the end of September 2008. Data from Landsat 1-5 will become available by February 2009.

Landsat scenes can be previewed and downloaded using the USGS Global Visualization Viewer at http://glovis.usgs.gov (under "Select Collection" choose Landsat archive: L7 SLC-off [2003-present]). Scenes can also be selected using the USGS Earth Explorer tool at http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov.

ICPSR’s Online Learning Center (OLC) supports quantitative literacy in the social sciences by providing an effective and reliable means of bringing data into the classroom. OLC tools were designed, built, and tested by teaching faculty.

Currently numbering 30 (with more added continually), our Data-Driven Learning Guides are designed for in-class presentation or as supplemental activities for students demonstrating a variety of types of data analysis and substantive concepts. Available on-demand 24/7, DDLGs:

* Demonstrate core concepts using prepared data with missing data and weights accommodated.
* Avoid the hassles of software licensing, setup, and instruction.
* Are easily customized to your teaching approach and syllabus.
* Are appropriate as supplemental exercises or for in-class demonstrations.

Please share this with your teaching community. We look forward to your feedback and suggestions via email, the OLC Blog, or the OLC listserv all available through the OLC website.

New IES Report from the National Center for Education Statistics: "Status and Trends in the Education of American Indians and Alaska Natives: 2008"

The National Center for Education Statistics within the Institute of Education Sciences has released the report "Status and Trends in the Education of American Indians and Alaska Natives: 2008."

This report examines both the educational progress of American Indian/Alaska Native children and adults and challenges in their education. It shows that over time more American Indian/Alaska Native students have gone on to college and that their attainment expectations have increased. Despite these gains, progress has been uneven and differences persist between American Indian/Alaska Native students and students of other racial/ethnic groups on key indicators of educational performance.

From MAPSS: Need subjects? Apply to Winter 09 REP!

The Research Experience Program (REP) is now accepting Winter 2009 applications. Applications are due October 10, 2008 at 5:00 pm.

If you intend to apply for Spring 2009, applications are due January 16th at 5:00 pm.

The REP is a program worked in joint with local community colleges to help Stanford faculty and students do experimental social science research more easily and effectively. The REP helps provide access to human participants at local community colleges. Participating in REP not only enhances your research by giving you access to a wider subject pool, it is also a great opportunity for students at local community colleges to gain first-hand exposure to experimental research in the social sciences. We accept both laboratory, especially laboratory experiments that can take place up at Foothill College, and online studies.

The website for applications can be found at: http://opinio.stanford.edu/opinio/s?s=957

This issue brief examines trends from 1997 to 2006 in the number of sub-baccalaureate postsecondary institutions that offer programs in career/technical education (CTE), and the number of sub-baccalaureate CTE credentials awarded by postsecondary institutions. Trends were examined by institutional sector, focusing on the three sectors most commonly offering CTE: Public two -year institutions, for-profit less-than-two -year institutions, and for-profit two-year institutions. In 2006, these sectors collectively accounted for 87 percent of the less-than-four-year institutions that offered CTE and awarded 94 percent of all sub-baccalaureate CTE credentials. Overall, the number of less-than-four-year institutions offering CTE increased 3 percent from 1997 to 2006, and the number of sub-baccalaureate CTE credentials awarded increased 24 percent. Over this time period, there was a shift in both CTE-offering institutions and CTE credentials, from public two-year institutions to for-p
rofit two-year and less-than-two-year institutions. Although the number of credentials awarded grew at a faster rate among for-profit institutions than among public two-year institutions, the latter still awarded most sub-baccalaureate CTE credentials in 2006 (58 percent) while for-profit two-year and less-than-two-year institutions combined awarded 35 percent.
