Summer Methods Workshops at Indiana
The Karl F. Schuessler Institute for Social Research Intensive Program at Indiana University is pleased to announce two one-week workshops in research methods for Summer, 2007. Our workshops provide intensive instruction by premier faculty in a congenial, interactive environment. They are designed to benefit graduate students and faculty who seek to hone their skills in specific areas as well as professionals in business, health research, and government. Both workshops will be held in Bloomington, Indiana.
Workshop I
Social Network Analysis: Theory and Methods
June 11-15, 2007
Instructors: Professor Bernice A. Pescosolido and Professor Stanley Wasserman, Indiana University
This workshop will be offered through the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Summer Program. It covers the theory and methods of network analysis. Unlike Network Analysis: An Introduction (taught in Ann Arbor), this course covers not only methodology, but also theoretical concerns and substantive backgrounds of network studies. It is designed for students, faculty, and other researchers in the social and behavioral sciences who are interested in learning how to translate theoretical conceptualizations of networks into empirical practice. Morning and afternoon sessions are coordinated so that each day presents theoretical, historical and substantive developments in the field with parallel issues and examples in data and analytic techniques. Workshop participants apply those techniques in late afternoon, computer lab sessions. Workshop II
Qualitative Methods
July 9-13, 2007
Instructor: Professor Sue E. Estroff, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
This intensive workshop is designed as a multi-method exploration of qualitative inquiry for students and scholars who have some experience with research, and would like to deepen their familiarity and facility with various qualitative data collection and analysis techniques. It is most appropriate for students, faculty, and other researchers who have a specific project at present, or planned in the near future, that can serve as a foundation for work in the class. Through a combination of readings, exercises, discussion, writing, and presentation, participants will engage with the theoretical foundations of qualitative research as well as gain hands-on experience with diverse qualitative techniques. The workshop covers but does not focus on the use of software programs for coding and analyzing text data. Prospective participants who wish to focus on coding software should seek out other forms of training. The class is limited to 14 participants to allow for substantial interaction with the faculty and other students in dyadic or other small group settings. Significant participation in selecting directions for the class will come from the participants. * U.S. Census Bureau Releases Prototype ACS Summary File (SF)
A prototype of the ACS Summary File (SF) will be released Feb. 14, 2007 on the ACS Web site. This is a postponement of two weeks from the release date announced in the Dec. 28, 2006, ACS Alert, Number 44.
Details on accessing the files and accompanying technical documentation will be released via ACS Alert on Feb. 14.
The Census Bureau and American Community Survey Office hopes this prototype ACS-SF will give data users the opportunity to work with this set of files and provide the Census Bureau with useful comments. Feedback may be sent to: cmo.acs@census.gov.
*2006 ACS Content Test Reports Now Available
In 2006, the Census Bureau conducted the first test of new and modified content since the ACS reached full implementation levels of data collection. The 2006 ACS Content Test report series presents the results of that testing that will help determine the content for the 2008 ACS.

Summer Workshops 2007
For Instructors of Undergraduate Courses in the Social Sciences
/SPACE/ workshops are intended for instructors of undergraduate students in the social sciences. They offer content knowledge in methods of spatial analysis, instructional resources, and professional development support for curriculum planning and learning assessment. Successful applicants must commit to implementing spatial perspectives in their undergraduate courses and to providing feedback and documentation to evaluate the /SPACE/ workshop program.
There are no fees associated with these workshops - participation is determined through a competitive application process. *The deadline for applications is 23 April 2007*. GIS and Spatial Modeling for the Undergraduate Social Science Curriculum
18-23 June 2007, Columbus OH
This workshop focuses on applications of spatial analytic techniques suited for undergraduate social science courses. These techniques include cartographic visualization, exploratory spatial data analysis, space-time modeling of individual behavior, spatial equilibrium models, and spatial optimization methods. Workshop participants will consider how to integrate these techniques into instructional modules, exercises, and learning assessment approaches. Requirements to benefit from this workshop include prior experience with computer file and data management in applications of quantitative analysis in the social sciences. GIS experience is desirable.

Hot Tip from Census Product Update
Entire Dataset Now Available in QuickFacts!
For many years, State and County QuickFacts has provided a convenient sampler of the range of data available at the county level from the Census Bureau. Now, in addition to the simple one-area-at-a-time display, QuickFacts enables users to download the entire dataset in an ASCII .csv format! Many of these same data items were previously downloadable from American FactFinder or other sources, but that required loading several different data sets to see the same range of data. Other items in QuickFacts have not previously been easily derivable from other sources (for example, population estimates by age, race/origin, or sex). The QuickFacts download file provides many of the numbers in both percentage and raw form for easy analysis but full flexibility for comparisons and ranking. The new download file gives data for the U.S., states, and counties. A download file including cities with 25,000 or more inhabitants is coming this spring.

NEW NCES REPORT! - FRSS 88: Public School Principals Report on Their School Facilities: Fall 2005 (NCES 2007-007)
This report provides information about principals' satisfaction with various environmental factors in their schools, and the extent to which they perceive those factors as interfering with the ability of the school to deliver instruction. The report also describes the extent of the match between the enrollment and the capacity of the school buildings, approaches for coping with overcrowding, the ways in which schools use portable (temporary) buildings and reasons for using them, and the availability of dedicated rooms or facilities for particular subjects (such as science labs or music rooms) and the extent to which these facilities are perceived to support instruction.
Major findings include:
More than half of the principals reported that their school had fewer students than the school’s design capacity: 21 percent said their school was underenrolled by more than 25 percent, and 38 percent said their school was underenrolled by between 6 and 25 percent. The remaining schools included those that had enrollments within 5 percent of their capacity (22 percent) and those that were overenrolled (10 percent were overenrolled by between 6 to 25 percent above their capacity, and 8 percent by more than 25 percent of their design capacity). Those schools that principals described as overcrowded used a variety of approaches to deal with the overcrowding: using portable classrooms (78 percent), converting non-classroom space into classrooms (53 percent), increasing class sizes (44 percent), building new permanent buildings or additions to existing buildings (35 percent), using off-site instructional facilities (5 percent), or other approaches (12 percent).

LESS THAN TWO WEEKS LEFT TO SUBMIT QUESTIONS FOR THE 2007-2009 ANES PANEL STUDY
We're writing today to remind you of what we hope you already know: The deadline is coming up for proposing questions for a new and dynamic ANES survey. The 2007-2009 ANES Panel Study will track the attitudes of a nationally representative group of respondents from well before the primaries begin to well after the campaigns have ended. This new study offers a great chance to see whether and how people change before, during, and after the 2008 presidential campaign season.
The only means for having questions you want placed on the ANES 2007-2009 Panel Study is to submit a proposal to the ANES Online Commons. We have heard from a number of people and we know that some of you are in the process of preparing proposals. This is exciting. In recent days, we have received proposals entitled "Predicting Political Attitudes and Voting Results: Insights from Demography," "Approval Voting Question," "Generativity in Politics: Caring for the Future," and "Issue Salience - the Open-Ended Problems Question." We very much hope you'll consider submitting a proposal as well.
Two weeks from today, the Online Commons will close. No decisions have been made yet about the content of the six political waves of this study. So if you have ideas that can improve this new study, now is a great time to tell us. If you have ever wanted a particular question or set of questions to appear on a panel study, particularly one conducted under the rigorous standards of the ANES, now is the time to act!

Households' Use of Public and Other Types of Libraries: 2002 has been released on the NCES web site. This report presents a series of tabulations that highlight households' use of public libraries. Patterns of library use by household demographic, social, economic, and geographic characteristics are presented. The data for this report were collected as part of the October 2002 Current Population Survey (CPS) Library Supplement. The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of households conducted by the Census Bureau for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Data are collected from a sample of 50,000 to 60,000 households through personal and telephone interviews.

From NCES Newsflash: Problem Solving in the PISA and TIMSS 2003 Assessments
In 2003, the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) included a special focus on problem-solving. This report reviews the problem-solving aspects of each study in order to compare and contrast the nature of problem solving in each assessment. The report’s authors develop and use a definition for problem solving to identify items in the two assessments that address students’ problem-solving capabilities. Items that were identified as problem-solving items in the TIMSS and PISA mathematics, science, and Cross-Disciplinary problem-solving assessments were analyzed in terms of six types of item characteristics: (1) content coverage; (2) cognitive processes; (3) problem-solving attributes; (4) item formats; (5) computational aspects; and (6) translation of representations.

From NCES Newsflash: Public-Use Data Files and Documentation: Foods and Physical Activity in Public Elementary Schools, 2005
This file contains data from a 2005 fast-response survey titled �Foods and Physical Activity in Public Elementary Schools: 2005. The study was prompted by concern over the rate of obesity among school-age children and was designed to obtain current national information on availability of foods and opportunities for exercise in public elementary schools. NCES released the results of the survey in the publication Calories In, Calories Out: Food and Exercise in Public Elementary Schools, 2005. Questionnaires and cover letters for the study were mailed to the principal of each sampled school in early March 2005, requesting that the questionnaire be completed by the person most knowledgeable about the availability of foods and opportunities for physical activity at the school. Respondents were encouraged to consult with the school’s food service personnel and physical education staff to complete relevant sections of the questionnaire. Respondents were also offered the option of completing the survey via the Web. Telephone follow-up for survey nonresponse and data clarification was initiated in late March 2005 and completed in late June 2005. The final response rate was 91 percent. Respondents were asked about the types of food sold at one or more locations in their schools and in their cafeterias or lunchrooms; the types of food sold at vending machines and school stores or snack bars, and times when foods were available at those locations; food service operations and contracts with companies to sell foods at schools; scheduled recess, including the days per week, times per day, and minutes per day of recess; scheduled physical education, including the days per week, class length, and average minutes per week of physical education; activities to encourage physical activity among elementary students; and the physical assessment of students.

Who's Moving? Geographic Mobility: 2000-2005 Has the Answers!
In 2005, 107.0 million people age 5 years old and over in the United States lived in a different residence than 5 years prior. The number of movers was virtually the same as the 106.6 million movers reported from the period 1990-1995 – the last time 5-year migration data was collected. The distribution of movers by type of move was: 52 percent of movers within the same county, 23 percent of movers from a different county within the same state, 20 percent of movers from different state, and 6 percent of movers from abroad. Find these tables and more, including characteristics of movers and nonmovers by type of move, online.

State Legislative District Data Now Available
The State Legislative District Summary Files (SF-1 and SF-3) provide data from Census 2000 for the state legislative districts whose boundaries were defined and delivered to the Census Bureau by the respective state governments during the 2005-2006 period. All 50 states and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico participated in this program. The subject content of the files is identical to the corresponding Census 2000 Summary Files. SF-1 includes population items such as age, sex, race, Hispanic or Latino, etc. SF-3 includes selected social, economic and housing characteristics including income, poverty, employment, education, and more. The data are available in American FactFinder. Will also be available as a two DVD set in the future. Disc one will contain the SF-1 and SF-3 data, and disc two will contain the block supplement file which associates the 2000 tabulation blocks with each State Legislative District.

The ALS: 2004 supplemental tables present state data; the institutional data tables appeared in the First Look report (2007-301) released on November 14, 2006. The 2006 dataset is being released more quickly than ever before so that users will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of the new Pilot Study questions in time to decide whether to propose them for inclusion on the upcoming 2007-2009 ANES Panel Study. Interviews were conducted in the US by Leger Marketing of Montreal. Parallel surveys were done in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Slovakia and the United Kingdom. Fieldwork was coordinated by TNS Opinion Social Institutes.

Methodology: Conducted by Gfk NOP Roper Public Affairs & Media, August 23-September 25, 2006 and based on telephone interviews with a national adult age 42 and older with oversamples of blacks, hispanics, and those age 42-44 sample of 1,641. The sample includes oversamples of Hispanics and African-Americans for a total of 200 each. There was also an oversample of those age 42-44. Results were weighted to be representative of a national adult population. In addition parallel surveys of 400 interviews were conducted in each of five states: California, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.
