This ECB released by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), features multiple search functions allowing the user to search by sector or respondent, keyword, variable name, source code, or type of variable. The ECB provides weighted and unweighted frequencies with search results, saves extraction code for future sessions, and creates a syntax file for exporting to SPSS, SAS and Stata. The CD also contains data files in ACSII format and documentation files on PDF.

In 2006, 39.8 million United States residents moved within the previous one-year period. Nearly half of the reasons given for moving (18.4 million) were housing related, such as wanting a bigger or smaller house. In 2006, nearly one-third (30 percent) of all people living in renter-occupied housing units lived elsewhere a year earlier. From IES Newsflash: Overview and Inventory of State Education Reforms: 1990 to 2000
The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has just expanded the State Education Reforms (SER) website. This website is based on the report "Overview and Inventory of State Education Reforms: 1990 to 2000".

This report is updated periodically to incorporate new data on state education reform activities.
The SER website, which draws primarily on data collected by organizations other than NCES, compiles and disseminates data on state-level education reform efforts in four areas: 1) standards, assessment, and accountability, 2) school finance reforms, 3) resources for learning, and 4) state support for school choice options. Specific reform areas include student and teacher assessments, adequate yearly progress, statewide exit exams, highly qualified teachers, open enrollments laws, and charter schools.
Three tables have been updated and one new table has been added to the Standards, Assessment, and Accountability area of the website. One updated table and one new table were postedto the School Finance Reforms area, and one new table was uploaded to the Resources for Learning section. To locate these tables on the website, please look for the "New!" and "Updated!" tags next to the table titles.

From Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) Users List (October 2007): SIPP Synthetic Beta Training
The Census Bureau has released a new product called the SIPP Synthetic Beta (SSB). This file was created by integrating data from the Survey of Program Participation (SIPP), Social Security Administration (SSA), and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and then synthesizing these data. This work was performed as part of a joint project between the three data contributing agencies. The goal was to create a product that could be used by researchers outside of the regular Census restricted-access facilities. These synthetic data should reproduce the characteristics of the underlying confidential micro-data and, at the same time, assure the confidentiality of the actual data on the sampled individuals. The Census Disclosure Review Board, SSA, and IRS have cleared this file for use by individuals without Census Special Sworn Status. Researchers interested in using the file should submit an application to the Census Bureau. This application can be found on the SIPP home page. Applications will be judged solely on feasibility (i.e. the necessary variables are on the SSB) and researchers will be given accounts on the server housing these data. While no data downloads are permitted at this time, individuals do not have to operate behind the Census firewall to access this server.
The SSB is a person-level file with SIPP, Summary Earnings Records (SER), Detailed Earnings Records (DER), and Master Beneficiary Records (MBR) information. This person-level file was created by extracting variables from the 1990-1996 SIPP panels, standardizing these variables, and then stacking individuals across panels. SER data from 1951-2003 and variables from the MBR were then merged onto the SIPP variables. Finally, DER data were summarized for each year from 1978-2003 in order to create person-level records and these were also merged. The resulting file contains approximately 40 SIPP variables, some of which time-vary and hence are repeated plus 5 SSA benefit variables, and 5 different types of earnings variables from the SER and DER which also time-vary for a total of 529 variables. The SSB is a stand-alone file and cannot be linked to other SIPP products or administrative data.
To facilitate the use of this new product, the Census Bureau is holding a training session on Friday, Oct. 26, 2007 from 1-4pm at Census Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland in room T9. There is no cost to attend this training but please reserve a spot by replying to Mary Chin (mary.p.chin@census.gov) if you plan to attend. NEW NCES REPORT! - Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002): A First Look at the Initial Postsecondary Experiences of the High School Sophomore Class of 2002
This report, released by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), provides selected, nationally representative information about the about the transition of 2002 high school sophomores to college, the selectivity and other characteristics of the institutions in which they enrolled, their choice of major, and other characteristics of their enrollment to illustrate the wealth of data that is available from the from the Second Follow-up of the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002. When the Second Follow-up data were collected, most of the sample members were sophomores in college. By 2006, approximately 2 years after their expected graduation date, 88 percent of spring 2002 sophomores had graduated from high school with a diploma and 4 percent had earned a General Education Development certificate. Sixty percent enrolled "immediately" in college after receiving their diploma (by October if they left high school between January and July, or by the following February if they left high school after July). High school students whose parents' income exceeded $100,000 per year had the highest rates of attendance at 4-year public and private institutions (44 and 26 percent, respectively), compared to students whose families earned $20,000 per year or less (14 and 7 percent, respectively). Thirteen percent of the spring 2002 high school sophomore class enrolled first in a highly selective 4-year institutions and 19 percent enrolled in a moderately selective 4-year institutions. Spring 2002 sophomores who took calculus in high school had the highest rates of enrollment (52 percent) in highly selective 4-year institutions. Among spring 2002 high school sophomores who had attended a postsecondary institution, 15 percent entered college intending to study business, 17 percent entered college intending to study health, and 15 percent entered college intending to study engineering/computer science/natural sciences/mathematics. An appendix to the report briefly summarizes the statistical design of the Second Follow-up.

From NCES Newsflash: NCES Winter Forum and 21th Annual Management Information Systems Conference, 2008 (MIS 2008)
The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), in the U.S Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES), will sponsor a 2-day meeting of the membership of the National Forum on Education Statistics. This will be immediately followed by the 21st Annual Management Information Systems (MIS) Conference.
The MIS Conference is a concentrated 3 days of information about best practices, innovative ideas, current issues, and practical how-to-advice about management information systems for K-12 education. The MIS Conference brings together people who work with information collection, management, transmittal, and reporting in school districts and state education agencies.
This year, the MIS Conference will offer more than 80 presentations, demonstrations, and workshops conducted by practitioners from K-12 information systems.
You are invited to attend the 21st Annual MIS Conference in San Francisco, California, and to submit a proposal for presenting a session that will add to the conference's interest and usefulness. Topics are invited from all sources, but the major focus will be on data use, data standards, statewide data systems, and data quality.

From APDU Newsletter (October 2007): GDP by Metropolitan Area and BEA's Regional Accounts
On September 26, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) released prototype estimates of gross domestic product (GDP) by metropolitan area for 2001-2005. This is a new series from BEA, and the first time BEA has computed gross domestic product at the sub-state level.
GDP by metropolitan area is the local counterpart of the nation’s GDP, the Bureau’s featured and most comprehensive measure of U.S. economic activity. Conceptually, an industry estimate of GDP by metropolitan area, or its “value added,” is the sum of incomes earned by labor and capital and the costs incurred in the production of goods and services. The GDP-bymetropolitan-area estimates can be used by both public and private sectors for various administrative purposes and for studying economic trends in metropolitan areas. For example:
• State and local governments may use the estimates in econometric models to project tax revenues and the need for public services and to promote economic development opportunities in their local area.
• Federal government agencies may use the estimates in econometric models, such as those used to project energy and water uses for cities.
• Academic researchers may use the estimates for applied economic research.
• Businesses, trade associations, and labor organizations may use the estimates for market research.
These data consist of estimates for 363 metropolitan areas and detail for 61 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) industries in current and chained dollars. With the inclusion of industry detail, users can evaluate industries between metro areas to see how they compare. Since the data are consistent with other datasets from BEA, users can directly compare the metro area estimates with those at the state, regional, industry, and national levels.
These data are prototype statistics in that they are being released for evaluation and comment by data users. There has been substantial interest in such statistics, and BEA might produce an annual series in the future, possibly employing a revised methodology. From Census Product Update (10/4/07): OnTheMap version 2.3 Released
The Census Bureau released OnTheMap version 2.3 with 42 states now appearing in the web-based mapping and reporting tool. This completes the phased release of OnTheMap version 2 that started on April 15, 2007. The 42 states in OnTheMap version 2 cover three years of data (2002-2004) and roughly 83 percent of the nation's population, introducing for the first time cross-state worker flows and new geographic layers such as Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) regions and the 110th Congressional Districts.
The freehand tool allows OnTheMap users to select geographical areas beyond traditional bounds and produce information on travel patterns; workforce distributions by age, earnings, and industry; and employment dynamics at the local level. OnTheMap is supported by the Employment and Training Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor and the 45 states in the Local Employment Dynamics partnership with the Census Bureau. 2007 West Coast Stata Users Group meeting
The first West Coast (of the United States) Stata Users Group meeting will be held October 25 and 26, 2007, at Marina del Rey Hotel, located 10 minutes from Los Angeles International Airport at water’s edge.
Stata Users Group meetings started in Britain in 1995 and have spread to Italy, Sweden, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Australia, and the East Coast. Talks are intended to be accessible to a general audience with mixed levels of expertise in Stata and statistics. Stata developers will also attend, both to present new Stata features and to take notes during the popular “Wishes and grumbles” session. We hope you will consider attending the meeting.
The registration deadline is October 15, 2007.

Source: Survey by German Marshall Fund of the US and the Compagnia di San Paolo, Italy, with additional support from the Luso-American Foundation, Portugal, Fundacion BBVA, Spain, and the Tipping Point Fdtn., Bulgaria.
Methodology: Conducted by TNS Opinion and Social Institutes, June 4-June 23, 2007 and based on telephone interviews with a national adult sample of 1,000. Interviews were conducted in the US by Leger Marketing of Montreal. Parallel surveys were conducted in Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, Spain, Slovakia, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania. Software on Unix switching to Linux: Stata, SPSS, SAS
Stanford is phasing out Solaris systems and switching to Linux.
If you use statistical software such as Stata, SPSS, and SAS remotely using an x-windows emulator such as VNC, please set up your server at one of the Linux machines such as hedge, vine, bramble (see here for details).
xstata (the x-windows version of Stata) no longer works on wisdom, power, and other Solaris 8 machines. SAS has been experiencing font display problems on the Solaris system as well.
