National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS)

The National Historical Geographic Information System (funded by NSF) at the Minnesota Population contains almost a terrabyte of historical census data and boundary files covering the United States from 1790 to 2000. Boundary files for historic counties and census tracts were created over the course of the project and are available either through the aggregate data access system or directly from the main page of the site.

The current contents of NHGIS cover the following areas:

* The modern Census of Population and Housing standard files for 1970-2000 (note that 2000SF4 will be added early in 2007)
* Historical census data including Religious Censuses, and pre-1930 Economic and Agriculture tables translated from printed sources for:
US, States, and Counties (1790-1960)
Tracts and limited Enumeration District and Ward data (1910-1960)
* Banking Establishments for US, State, and County 1920-1936
* County Business Patterns for US, State, and County (1970-2003)
* Farm Values for US, State, and County (1850-1959)
* Special and Supplemental Files from the 1980 and 1990 Census

Additional historical files on historical election returns, Economic and Agricultural Censuses will be added during the coming year. Access to all summary levels for the modern census files will be added in the near future.

The NHGIS collection is through http://www.nhgis.org and is open to all for research purposes. Registration requires completing a short
form.

That’s only one of thousands of nuggets of information on Americana and the world in the U.S. Census Bureau’s Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2007, released today.

“The Statistical Abstract is a collaborative effort that showcases our government statistics and the work of the international community, private industry and nonprofit agency researchers,” said Census Bureau Director Louis Kincannon.

Adults will spend about a week reading a daily newspaper and teens and adults will spend another week listening to recorded music. Consumer spending for media is forecasted to be $936.75 per person.

The Statistical Abstract includes topics as diverse as condo and mobile home sales to new tables on alternative work schedules and the North American cruise industry. From NCES Newsflash: Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (ECLS-B) 9-Month Data Now Publicly Available in Data Analysis System (DAS)

The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (ECLS-B) 9-month data are now available for analysis to the general public in the Data Analysis System (DAS). The DAS, which can be accessed at http://nces.ed.gov/das/, is a software application that allows users to build tables of weighted estimates from the ECLS-B variables included in the DAS. An on-line tool allows users to calculate t-tests from estimates produced in the DAS. Users can also produce correlation matrices for use in linear regression analyses. The DAS webpage has links to an on-line tutorial and user guide to help users navigate through the application and produce desired tables.

The ECLS-B follows children who were born in 2001 through kindergarten entry. The DAS includes data on sampled children's development and sociodemographic characteristics, as well as the characteristics of their families and home and child care environments. For more information on the ECLS-B, see http://nces.ed.gov/ecls/Birth.asp.

ANES: Only 50 Days Left to Propose Questions for the 2007-2009 Panel Study

Dear ANES user community,

We wanted to send you a reminder that there are only 50 days left to submit a proposal to include questions on the first waves of the 2007-2009 ANES Panel Study. The deadline for submitting proposals is January 31, to be followed by a short comment and revision period. The ANES Online Commons (OC) is the only method by which questions can be proposed for the study.

Panel data are appealing for studying elections, because one of the major interests of election analysts is change over time in individuals. Our plan for the ANES 2007-2009 Panel Study involves six ANES-based waves of interviewing with the same respondents, plus 15 additional secondary waves of data collection. The data collection will be conducted on the Internet with a nationally representative panel recruited specifically for this purpose. The first ANES wave of data will be collected in September 2007.

If you have not already visited the ANES OC, you can do so by visiting the following location on our website: http://www.electionstudies.org/onlinecommons.htm

We would also like to use this opportunity to announce that an advance release of data from the 2006 ANES Pilot Study will be available for download from the ANES website (www.electionstudies.org) no later than January 12, 2007. The advance release will contain all of the survey data, but with minimal data cleaning and few administrative or derivative variables. The timing of the release is so that analysts have a couple of weeks to evaluate the performance of Pilot Study questions in case they wish to propose that the questions should also appear on the Panel Study.

We are very excited about our ability to bring this opportunity to you. As of right now, the questionnaires are wide open. This is the largest opportunity in years to place questions on an ANES -- one this is likely to be used by scholars, students and journalists for decades to come! Don't be left out.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
Jon Krosnick and Arthur Lupia
Principal Investigators
American National Election Studies (ANES)

Additional information about the design and purpose of the 2007-2009 ANES Panel Study can be found on the Online Commons page. If you have questions that are not answered there, please send us an email to: anes@electionstudies.org

From NCES Newsflash: NEW NCES REPORT! - Dropout Rates in the United States: 2004

This report builds upon a series of National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reports on high school dropout and completion rates that began in 1988. It presents estimates of rates for 2004, and provides data about trends in dropout and completion rates over the last three decades (1972–2004), including characteristics of dropouts and completers in these years. Among other findings, the report shows that in students living in low-income families were approximately four times more likely to drop out of high school between 2003 and 2004 than were their peers from high-income families. Focusing on indicators of on-time graduation from public high schools, the averaged freshman graduation rate for the 3 most recent years for which data are available shows an increase from 72.6 percent for 2001–02 to 73.9 percent for 2002–03 to 74.3 percent for 2003–04.

New IPUMS-International data!

The Minnesota Population Center is pleased to announce the latest expansion of the IPUMS-International data series. In December 2006 we added 16 new samples for Belarus, Cambodia, Greece, the Philippines, Romania, Spain, and Uganda. The data series now contains 185 million person records from 63 samples and 20 countries. The new URL is http://international.ipums.org.

As the database grows, we constantly try to make it easier for researchers to use. With this release we have improved the data system in several ways. In addition to the 400 harmonized IPUMS variables, users can now view and extract over 5,000 unharmonized variables specific to the individual samples. These have undergone differing degrees of processing, but they generally contain all of the useful information in the original samples that does not pose a confidentiality concern. A second enhancement is the ability to filter all variable documentation based on user sample selections, limiting the information on the screen to what is relevant to the researcher. Finally, some complex variables now have additional "general" versions utilizing only their first digit or two, making them easier to use.

You can read more about these and other improvements at http://international.ipums.org/international/news.html. As always, if you discover problems with the system or have suggestions as to how it could be improved, we welcome your feedback.

We are also eager to hear about the results of research using these data. Please email us with book or journal article citations, conference presentations, or working paper releases so we can include them in the IPUMS bibliography.

Regards,
The IPUMS Team

NEW NCES REPORT! - Indicators of School Crime and Safety, 2006 (NCES 2007-003)

On December 3, 2006, the National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics released Indicators of School Crime and Safety, 2006 (NCES 2007-003). This annual report examines crime occurring in school as well as on the way to and from school. It provides the most current detailed statistical information on the nature of crime in schools. This report presents data on crime at school from the perspectives of students, teachers, and principals from an array of sources--the National Crime Victimization Survey, the School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the School Survey on Crime and Safety and the School and Staffing Survey.

Several of the indicators in the report document the decline in school crime. For example, the victimization rate of students ages 12-18 at school declined from 73 victimizations per 1,000 students in 2003 to 55 victimizations per 1,000 students in 2004. Between 2003 and 2005, the percent of students reporting victimization declined from 5 to 4 percent, as did the percentage reporting theft from 4 to 3 percent; however, there was no measurable decline in the percentages reporting violent and serious violent crime during the same period. The number of homicides of school-age youth 5-18 at school was higher in 2004-05 than in 2000-01 (21 vs. 11 homicides), but remained below most years in the 1990s.
