From ESRI Libraries & GIS News, Fall 2008

Introducing ArcGIS Online Services - GIS Data Services

ArcGIS Online Services provides access to high-quality basemaps (street maps, imagery, topography) for use in ArcMap, ArcGIS Explorer, and Web applications. Hosted and maintained by ESRI, ArcGIS Online Services provides access to terabytes of data on demand, so there's no need to store and manage updates at your site. Standard services are available at no cost for noncommercial use, and premium services are available by subscription.

* Standard services include a world street map,
15-meter imagery for the world with 1-meter resolution for the United States, 90-meter elevation for the world with 30-meter elevation for the United States, and topographic maps from the National Geographic Society for the United States.

* Premium services include high-resolution imagery for the United States and content from Microsoft Virtual Earth services.

The ArcGIS Online Resource Center provides previews of both standard and premium services including metadata (resolution, accuracy, date, source). Free trials are available for premium services. Learn more.

Improved PDF Support in ArcGIS 9.3

ArcGIS 9.3 has improved functionality for exporting maps to Adobe PDF format. Feature attributes can now be included in exported PDFs and accessed by Adobe Reader users. ArcGIS 9.3 also adds support for the new geospatial capabilities in the PDF formats introduced in Adobe Acrobat 9 including support for coordinate readout, find x,y measurement, and markup.

For example, recipients of PDF map documents can now query and identify feature attributes, find and display a location on the map using x,y coordinates, and measure features directly on the map. Some features require the Adobe Reader 9 or Acrobat 9 Pro or higher. Learn more.

All Landsat Data to Be Available at No Cost

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is pursuing an aggressive schedule to provide users with electronic access to any Landsat scene held in the USGS-managed national archive of global scenes dating back to Landsat 1, which was launched in 1972, by February 2009. Currently, newly acquired Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) data covering North America and Africa is already distributed by the USGS over the Internet at no charge, with plans for the full archive of historic Landsat 7 ETM+ data to be available for selection and downloading by the end of September 2008. Data from Landsat 1-5 will become available by February 2009.

Landsat scenes can be previewed and downloaded using the USGS Global Visualization Viewer at http://glovis.usgs.gov (under "Select Collection" choose Landsat archive: L7 SLC-off [2003-present]). Scenes can also be selected using the USGS Earth Explorer tool at http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov.

New IES Report from the National Center for Education Statistics: "Status and Trends in the Education of American Indians and Alaska Natives: 2008"

The National Center for Education Statistics within the Institute of Education Sciences has released the report "Status and Trends in the Education of American Indians and Alaska Natives: 2008."

This report examines both the educational progress of American Indian/Alaska Native children and adults and challenges in their education. It shows that over time more American Indian/Alaska Native students have gone on to college and that their attainment expectations have increased. Despite these gains, progress has been uneven and differences persist between American Indian/Alaska Native students and students of other racial/ethnic groups on key indicators of educational performance.

New IES Report from the National Center for Education Statistics: "Postsecondary Career/Technical Education: Changes in the Number of Offering Institutions and Awarded Credentials from 1997 to 2006"

The National Center for Education Statistics within the Institute of Education Sciences has released the report "Postsecondary Career/Technical Education: Changes in the Number of Offering Institutions and Awarded Credentials from 1997 to 2006."

This issue brief examines trends from 1997 to 2006 in the number of sub-baccalaureate postsecondary institutions that offer programs in career/technical education (CTE), and the number of sub-baccalaureate CTE credentials awarded by postsecondary institutions. Trends were examined by institutional sector, focusing on the three sectors most commonly offering CTE: Public two -year institutions, for-profit less-than-two -year institutions, and for-profit two-year institutions. In 2006, these sectors collectively accounted for 87 percent of the less-than-four-year institutions that offered CTE and awarded 94 percent of all sub-baccalaureate CTE credentials. Overall, the number of less-than-four-year institutions offering CTE increased 3 percent from 1997 to 2006, and the number of sub-baccalaureate CTE credentials awarded increased 24 percent. Over this time period, there was a shift in both CTE-offering institutions and CTE credentials, from public two-year institutions to for-p
rofit two-year and less-than-two-year institutions. Although the number of credentials awarded grew at a faster rate among for-profit institutions than among public two-year institutions, the latter still awarded most sub-baccalaureate CTE credentials in 2006 (58 percent) while for-profit two-year and less-than-two-year institutions combined awarded 35 percent.

On September 22-23, Peter Meyer, Director of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Research Data Centerprogram, and Ron Jarmin, Chief Economist and Chief of the Center for Economic Studies at the Census Bureau, will be visiting Stanford for discussions with the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences. While they are here, they will be doing some presentations about the availability of restricted-use data through the Research Data Centers (RDCs) of the U.S. Bureau of Census.

The NCHS data in the RDC’s include the restricted versions of large number of data collections, including the National Health Interview Survey, NHANDS, National Hospital Discharge Survey, National Survey of Family Growth, National Immunization Survey, National Home and Hospice Care Survey, National Nursing Home Survey, a number of surveys from the State and Local Area Integrated Telephone Surveys (SLAITS), as well as many others.

The target audience for these data might include researchers in public health, health policy, social welfare, or epidemiology.

We have scheduled a public presentation by Peter Meyer on Monday, September 22nd at 3:30. This will be followed by a brief reception during which time researchers will have the opportunity to meet with Mr. Meyer individually.

Ron Jarmin will visit Stanford on Tuesday, September 23rd and will give his presentation at 11 a.m. He will also be open to individual meetings on Tuesday afternoon between 2 and 3.

Both of these meetings will take place in the Mendenhall Library (Building 120).

If you would like to meet with these scholars, please contact Afrooz Emami (afrooz@stanford.edu). We would love to have a tentative headcount for these presentations. Afrooz can also set you up with an individual meeting – should you wish to have one.

We hope to see you at these presentations,

Szonja Szelényi (szelenyi@stanford.edu)

New IES Report from the National Center for Education Statistics: "Dropout and Completion Rates in the United States: 2006"

The National Center for Education Statistics within the Institute of Education Sciences has released the report "Dropout and Completion Rates in the United States: 2006."

This report builds upon a series of National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reports on high school dropout and completion rates that began in 1988. It presents estimates of rates for 2006 and provides data about trends in dropout and completion rates over the last three decades (1972-2006), including characteristics of dropouts and completers in these years. Report highlights include: The averaged freshman graduation rate (AFGR), which provides an estimate of the percentage of public high school students who graduate with a regular diploma 4 years after starting 9th grade, was 74.7 percent for the class of 2005. Students living in low-income families were approximately four times more likely to drop out of high school between 2005 and 2006 than were students living in high-income families. In October 2006, approximately 3.5 million civilian noninstitutionalized 16- through 24-year-olds were not enrolled in high school and had not earned a high school diploma or alternative credential.
