NEW NCES REPORT! - To Teach or Not to Teach? Teaching Experience and Preparation Among 1992-1993 Bachelor's Degree Recipients 10 Years After College

Using data from the 2003 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B:93/03), this report profiles 1992-93 bachelor’s degree recipients’ experience with K-12 teaching in the subsequent 10 years, as well as their preparation for teaching. The analysis first compares current and former teachers in this cohort on several demographic and educational measures, and contrasts these groups with 1992-93 graduates who never taught. The report provides an overview of teachers’ job satisfaction and, for those not teaching in 2002-03, the main reason for not teaching. The second section looks at graduates’ preparation for teaching, including the key steps of completing a teacher education program, serving as a student teacher, and earning certification. Finally, the report examines the main reasons graduates who never taught gave for deciding against teaching.

From IES Newsflash: Information on Courses, Credits, GPA, and NAEP Performance for High School Graduates

NCES' National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has information about the types of courses that high school graduates have taken, credits earned, grade point averages, and the relationship between coursetaking patterns and NAEP achievement. This information is collected every four years via the NAEP High School Transcript Study (HSTS). Analysis of over 20,000 transcripts from schools across the nation provide a wealth of information--to see what's available, start with http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/hsts/

This brief publication contains data on revenues and expenditures per pupil made by school districts for school year 2004-05. Median per pupil revenue and expenditure data are reported by state, as well as values at the 5th and 95th percentiles. Data for charter schools are reported separately. There are also discussions on the different types of school districts, and other resources that may be helpful in analyzing school district level data. Revenues and expenditures for the 100 largest school districts are included, as well as federal revenues by program. ICPSR Announces the Launch of MyClass

ICPSR is pleased to announce the launch of MyClass – a mass registration process where faculty and librarians are able to reserve temporary user accounts for a class or training group who will be working with ICPSR data and resources.

Users of MyClass accounts can download and manipulate data without going through the process of establishing permanent MyData accounts. The benefit is that MyClass enables instructors to focus very little classroom time on the registration process and proceed directly to working with data.

Data access is available immediately after creation of MyClass accounts. After a period of time that instructors specify, the temporary accounts will cease to exist.

To create MyClass accounts, you must have a valid MyData account and your institution must be a member of ICPSR.

MyClass account creation can be found by following this link http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/cgi-bin/bob/myclass or by using the link found on the OR site under the Access section - http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/ICPSR/or/index.html. Additional links to the MyClass page are found on the ICPSR home page within Quick Links or under the Courses & Learning Tools tab within Instructional Resources.

This is the first phase of what is expected to be multiple phases of MyClass development. Future phases of MyClass might provide temporary collaboration space that enables instructors to place ICPSR resources materials and links into predefined folders, has import/export capabilities, and enables users to create, extract, and save online analysis code, variables, and output into the space. We encourage your input on its development.

Please forward this email to any in your campus community that may find this tool useful for their classroom or training purposes.

Enchanced ICPSR Authentication Allows Off-Campus Download

ICPSR is pleased to inform you that it has enhanced its authentication protocol to enable users at ICPSR Direct institutions to download data from off-campus without using a proxy server. Users can now download data from home and when traveling.

How does it work?

In order to download data from off-campus, all you need to do is log on to the ICPSR Web site from a campus computer. Do this once at the beginning of the semester, and your account is flagged for off-campus access for the next six months.

Every time you log on from a campus computer, it revalidates your account for off-campus downloading, so you really only need to visit your campus once a semester.

How do I start?

Just get on a campus workstation and log on to the ICPSR Web site. If you don't have a MyData account already, you'll need to create one. The rest happens automatically.

How do I validate for off-campus access if I'm already off-campus?

If for some reason you were unable to log on before leaving campus for an extended period of time, just contact ICPSR User Support at netmail@icpsr.umich.edu or contact your OR directly. Our staff will verify your status with your OR and flag your account so that you are validated for off-campus downloading.

Matthew Richardson, ICPSR
