UNIX Computing Resources at Stanford
Overview
The UNIX Computing Resources service provides UNIX and Linux facilities for general and research computing to anyone with a full-service SUNet ID. It consists of a Remote Computing facility run by Information Technology Services and two public computer labs administered by the School of Engineering; one of these is located in the Terman Engineering Center, and the other in Gates Computer Science.
Additional resources may be available to students or faculty affiliated with a specific department. The Graduate School of Business provides special access to the gsb-yen.stanford.edu systems, while the departments of Communication, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, and the School of Education provide special access to the power.stanford.edu and wisdom.stanford.edu systems.
Responsible use of UNIX Computing Resources at Stanford is governed by policy.
Getting Started
The UNIX and Linux Operating Systems
All shared workstations run a version of the UNIX-compatible Linux operating system (for convenience, the term UNIX is often used here to refer both to true UNIX systems and any compatible operating system).
Users of the UNIX Computing Resources service should be familiar with the UNIX shell environment and basic UNIX commands. For more information on UNIX computing at Stanford see the Related Pages on the left side of this page.
Available Software
Information Technology Services maintains locally installed software on each machine it operates, as well as a wide selection of software for use on any Stanford UNIX workstation, including many popular licensed applications.
Choosing the Right Computer
The UNIX Computing Resources service provides a variety of computers intended to support a number of different computing tasks. Selecting the right system for a particular job depends upon the method used to access the computer and the kind of task to be performed.
Connecting from a Remote Location
All shared systems support secure terminal access from remote locations using Mac, PC, and UNIX clients, as well as the remote display of graphical applications using X-windows or VNC software. Console access to workstations in the public labs is allowed, but users of the remote computing facility are required to connect remotely.
