Our challenge is to design a learning space in a hospital environment. We will be starting with a broad view and then narrow our project to a specific location -- ER, pediatrics, cafeteria, etc. Although we hope to create a model that will be effective in underserved communities, we will begin by observing locally, at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital.
Dan: Good start to use LPCH, although challenges are obviously different at underserved hospital, LPCH is a good place to try out new innovative ideas, reflective of the context around it. Some opportunities in a hospital:
- lots of experts around, but all are busy and distracting them can cause serious consequences for other patients. I recently saw an article about a dr. who put ipods in his waiting room and did podcasts on specific health isseus for patients to listen to while waiting. Visit my blog on Educause to see the details, original articles and some comments others left about this topic.
- complex web of social structures in place to be aware of. doctors and nurses are experts but patients are becoming more and more informed, though they don't necessarily have the broad experience that doctors have. So space must respect the social roles but also be flexible enough to accommodate changes in these roles.
good luck!
