CHRIS JOHNSON

Hello,

My name is Chris Johnson. As the former Director of the Digital Media Center in the Integrated Learning Center at the University of Arizona (http://www.ilc.arizona.edu) I have become increasingly involved in the planning and development of learning space.

Through my work, I’ve found the following resources to be helpful.

From the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI)

Organizations

If you become interested in the subject, I recommend that you investigate joining the EDUCAUSE Constituency Group on Learning Space Design - http://www.educause.edu/Community/ConstituentandDiscussionGroups/5983

If I can be of any assistance, I can be reached at cgj@u.arizona.edu

STEVE EHRMANN

Hi,

I'm Steve Ehrmann, Vice-President of The Teaching, Learning, and Technology Group, and author/editor of the web site that Chris referred to in his post. Our site is built around the assumption that learning spaces can be planned and evaluated based on the activities that they make easy, or hard. For example, if you're interested in the activity of moving people easily into, and out of, different small discussion groups, you may want a physical space that has a smooth floor and wheeled chairs. Or else some kind of online system that makes it easier for moderators or even participants to create smaller, private audio or text conversations. Other kinds of spaces make this activity harder (rooms with chairs bolted to the floor).

The web site, http://www.tltgroup.org/Facilities/Home.htm, contains a list of such teaching/learning activities - tactical and strategic activities that are especially valuable and that are problematic - they're easier in some kinds of spaces than in others. Each activity includes illustrations of physical and online spaces that make those activities especially easy or rich. If you'd like to suggest new illustrations or new activities to add to this site, or if you'd just like to talk, my e-mail address is ehrmann@tltgroup.org
