Week 1 & 2 Readings

Learning Space Design Theory and Practice by Malcolm Brown Story about island child. History of her island Knowledge displays are closely tied to cultural notions about learning. They serve to identify both what valued knowledge is and who should know it. Like the examples of the two different age groups.

Deb Kim: This is a very important insight. Yes, we did not really get a chance to talk enough about this. Please bring it up again at the start of week 3 when we devote more time to reading discussion. The notion that learning and what is valued about it and it's outcomes is very culturally defined. This will be an important consideration in our class design of a rubric for the design of learning spaces. Who is the audience, what might their values of knowledge/learning be and who should be the "knowers" of the information and learning process? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
