Brainstorm Idea 2 – Arts: History and Culture

Rationale: The arts is a nice opportunity to "get away" from work. Work in a high-paced, technology-centered environment may find the arts as a break from work. Thus, to provide an outlet from work at Songdo, we hope to incorporate some form of arts entertainment into the city where people can find an enjoyable, relaxing opportunity that still allows them to learn something beyond the confines of work and help people to maintain balance and harmony in their lives through the arts.

Application: Due to the international diversity of people that find themselves at Songdo, we hope to provide them with experiences to learn about the history and culture of Korea as well as other countries. In a sense, we hope to create a history/culture learning opportunity and actually build that into the culture of the city. We want to capitalize on the thought of it being such a diverse community and design some sort of display area in a central, highly-accessible part of the city that will be conducive to learning about different cultures and a place where people come back to frequently. To aid in the design, perhaps it would be a place that a lot of people who work in the area would like to go on a lunch break. While enjoying the outdoors for lunch, strategic placement of displays/exhibits may allow them to learn something new in that hour. Due to the social aspect of a lunch break, perhaps it will also capitalize on a potential community of learning. Additionally, the display can be part of a larger “learning tour” of the city. For visitors, this exhibit may be part of a larger learning experience that utilizes a walking tour where learning occurs along the way (ie. Boston’s “freedom trail” where you follow a red line to go around the city to visit sites such as the state house, Paul Revere’s home, and the USS Constitution).
