A campus alive with ingenuity

Provost Drell and Andrew Luck ride on a motorized couch through campus, solar car behind them, band to the side

Stanford is populated by energetic thinkers and doers from everywhere you’d expect and plenty of places you wouldn’t. That’s part of the magic: students, faculty, and staff meet peers whose experiences and perspectives vary from their own.

They learn from one another simply by being who they are.

The Student Experience

A day at Stanford presents a dizzying array of possibilities.

Bike to morning lecture, delivered by a Nobel laureate. Log hours in the lab, advancing cutting-edge cancer research. Swim laps in Avery pool, with an Olympian a lane away. Catch an evening conversation with a retired Supreme Court justice. It’s all in a day at Stanford.

Residential education

Living and learning are woven together in residential education at Stanford. Students connect with peers, develop valuable skills, and take part in activities that push them to grow. The result is a dynamic community that supports and enriches every resident’s time on campus.

Housing and dining

Where you live, and who you live with, will have a profound impact on your college experience. Stanford gets that, and works hard to provide housing that is designed for both comfort and community.

Undergraduate student housing

Undergraduate residences range from large freshman dorms, to small, four-class houses on the Row, to fraternities and sororities, to co-ops where members cook their own dinners and take turns baking fresh bread each weeknight.

Graduate student housing

Options include on-campus spaces for individuals, couples, and families, with co-located cafes and pubs, outdoor gathering spaces, and easy access to gyms and other amenities.

Dining on campus

In dining halls, chefs and cooking staff bring a modern mindset to food choices and preparation, with a plate for every dietary need and a dish for every palate. Yakisoba noodles, anyone? Homestyle beef stew? A new allergen-free dining hall, at Branner, offers a safe and secure environment for students with complex food allergies.

Campus events

There’s always something happening at Stanford. University-sponsored lectures feature world leaders and renowned scholars. The student-run Stanford Speakers Bureau has been bringing Nobel laureates, artists, and creators to campus since 1935.

Student organizations

What’s your passion? There’s most likely a club for that. How about Down with Gravity, for juggling enthusiasts? The Stanford Student Space Initiative literally builds and launches rockets. Mariachi, double dutch, humor writing — you name it, you’re likely to find a group among the more than 600 on campus that will satisfy your inner nerd.

Volunteer and service opportunities

Whether you seek to make a difference five or 5,000 miles away, opportunities abound at the Haas Center for Public Service. Each year, more than 1,000 students engage in service through Haas, which partners with community organizations, nonprofits, and companies around the world.

Club sports

Over 45 competitive and recreational teams operate as Stanford club sports, including archery, badminton, dragon boat, golf, jump rope, ultimate, and wushu. Club members level up in strength and finesse, forming strong bonds as they practice, travel, and compete together.

Varsity athletics

Current students get free admission to all regular season home games. And when you cheer on that swimmer from your biology class, you may be cheering a current or future Olympian.

Bringing funk to the funkless

The Leland Stanford Jr. University Marching Band, aka LSJUMB, shares its unique brand of musical entertainment at games as well at campus events throughout the year. The Band is home to the Tree, Stanford’s unofficial mascot, as well as the Stanford Dollies, who have been the university’s most visible dance presence at athletic events since 1953.
