Wang Ling, Associate Professor in Management at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) in Beijing, arrived at Stanford August 2009 for a year researching the commercialization of green technology (Greentech), specifically

  • How to stimulate innovation in Greentech
  • How to transfer green technology from the R&D stages to the manufacturing platform
  • How to apply Intellectual Property management techniques to the development of green technologies

Her BS degree is in Applied Chemistry; it was during her work towards an MS in Biomedical Engineering that she began thinking about the practical application of her experimental work; how to transfer the ideas developed and tested in a lab to the industrial sector. She realized her interests were in moving ideas to market and this led to her decision to move out of the lab and into technology management for her Ph.D. in Management Science & Engineering, which she received in 2004 from Tianjin University. She then moved on to Tsinghua University as a post-doctoral research fellow studying technology integration in manufacturing in China. It was during her studies of technology management that she was introduced to the field of intellectual property (IP). In 2006, she moved to CUPL.

At CUPL, Ling teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in the business school.  One undergraduate class is on entrepreneurial management and is the first such class at CUPL; she also teaches a course on technology innovation and intellectual property management to graduate students. She is particularly interested in IP protection for new technologies on their way to commercialization, and seeks to impress on the students the vital role of socially responsible decision-making in selecting technology for an enterprise, the pressing need to choose a “good” green technology.

On January 27, 2010, Ling gave a seminar at Y2E2, Stanford, which was titled: A Decision Support Model for Patent Licensor Selection.
