Initial Planning for Technology Transfer

There is no one "right way" to go about the conceptualization of a research project, but there are some questions that can be asked along the way that can later turn out to be a big help in the transfer process.

These questions occur at two phases:

  1. when alternative ideas for research and development are being weighed, and

  2. when the project itself is being designed (before or during the preparation of a proposal for support to carry out the project).

Planning sheets for each of these phases follow. The questions listed are meant as reminders or considerations for your use. Resource persons that you might want to contact are suggested when appropriate.

These contacts can take place in many ways. Contact may consist of informal meetings, electronic mail, or other avenues for exchanging information. If you do choose to discuss the ideas or design with others, it is appropriate to briefly note who w as interacted with and what transpired. You might find it desirable to start a log book relating specifically to the idea/project, which would then be updated as a continuing record of events and interactions throughout the project. (This can be important in filing a patent application.)

Examples are given following the suggested questions related to

     Investigator
 Transfer Officer
 Center Director
