ASL 2005 Annual Meeting
Local Information

The Location

Stanford University is situated on the San Francisco Peninsula roughly midway between San Francisco and San Jose. The main part of campus borders the small cities of Palo Alto and Menlo Park which are known for their tree-lined streets, up-scale shops, and fine restaurants. Within a 45-minute drive, visitors can choose between hiking trails and beaches, or the dynamic city-life and cultural opportunities of San Francisco. The immediate surroundings of the university have much to offer including an art museum, sculpture gardens, architectural features, shopping districts, and open space. The Stanford area enjoys a temperate climate year around, and during the month of March average high temperatures are in the mid 60s and lows are in the mid 40s (Fahrenheit), with a few days of rainfall.

The main lectures and registration for the ASL Annual Meeting will take place in the Main Quad's Math Corner (Sloan Mathematics Center). Maps and additional local information can be found on Stanford's visitor information web page http://www.stanford.edu/dept/visitorinfo/

Arrival by air

Stanford is roughly equidistant from San Jose (SJC) and San Francisco (SFO) airports. A number of private companies also provide shuttle transportation from the San Francisco and San Jose airports, and taxis serve the Stanford campus from both locations. Lower-cost ground-transportation options include bus and train routes. The least expensive ground transportation from SFO is the San Mateo County Transit (SamTrans) Bus Route KX which goes to the Stanford Shopping Center. Another option is to take Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) from SFO to the Milbrae station, and then take CalTrain to Palo Alto. More information about public transportation is available at http://www.transitinfo.org. For additional questions or trip planning assistance, please call the Bay Area Transit Information Hotline by dialing 511 from within the San Francisco Bay Area or (510) 817-1717 from outside the San Francisco Bay Area.

Arrival by car

Please visit http://www.stanford.edu/home/visitors/directions.html for directions to the Stanford University campus. Sharing a room

If you wish to save expenses by sharing a room with another ASL participant, we will try to put you in touch with a possible roommate. Contact the ASL office, preferably by email at asl@vassar.edu, if you wish to take advantage of this service. Please provide the following information: (1) your arrival and departure dates, (2) your gender, (3) whether or not you smoke (and if not, whether you would accept a roommate who does), and (4) a telephone number where you can be reached to coordinate arrangements. Note that even if you have requested that we try to find you a suitable roommate, you should still make your own reservation in the Stanford area; later, if a roommate match is achieved, and both you and your roommate have made reservations, one of them should be cancelled.
