In order to protect the laser
from accidental splashes or spills a splash guard was placed between the laser and the
optics chamber. The white splash guard and base were made from Corian counter top
material. Though somewhat unorthodox, this plastic is very dense and therefore
stable. It also is machineable, bondable, and non-corrosive. Small quantities
are usually obtainable from a local cabinet shop, sold as sink cutouts. A photograph
of the assembled machine is shown below. The yellow arrow represents the direction
of embryo and fluid flow.
