Always involve the Transfer Officer and the Center Director in any decision to work in collaboration with a manufacturer. In many situations, you will want to negotiate a formal Cooperative R & D Agreement. The Transfer Officer will help you draft and negotiate the document.

If a marketable product will result from your research and if the information you are sharing is of a nature that could compromise later patentability, remember to use non-disclosure agreements with different companies you are considering. This will assure that the firm you eventually select has not already received privileged information about the product.
