Working with colleagues in non-VA medical facilities

Colleagues in non-VA medical facilities, like employees of universities or private medical centers, can make important contributions to projects both in technical expertise and in having access to facilities and subjects that might be a part of your study. Again, joint appointments are possible, though not as frequent as with Stanford University.

In deciding to work with a colleague in this environment, you will need to consider whether the involvement calls for consultation or is more substantial in nature. Generally, the same guidelines apply here as with university staff (outlined above).

Be sure to allow sufficient time to work out a Cooperative Agreement if this is the course of action that seems most appropriate. Execute these agreements before, not after, the fact. The Transfer Officer will help in working out the agreement. The Center Director must authorize it and the General counsel must approve it.
