Working with colleagues in university settings

As you start to work with colleagues in university settings, make it a point to know whether the RR & D Center has a working agreement with the particular university.

Fortunately, the RR & D Center has already developed effective working relationships with the faculty at Stanford University. Stanford/VA joint appointments are not unique and often at least one of the co-investigators in an RR & D project has such an appointment. in an RR & D project has such an appointment.

Bear in mind that projects carried out with VA support are considered to lead to VA-owned products, regardless of whether staff have joint appointments. Unless the work has been contracted to the university, you'll need to "put on your VA hat" if you foresee that a patentable product will result from the work you will carry out.

Remember that consultants, from the university or elsewhere, are eligible for ownership rights just as are VA employees. The extent and nature of the consultation on patentable items will determine whether joint ownership will be an issue.
