Example

An Investigator has been involved in mobility research and development for some time. Recently, in a meeting with colleagues working on robotics, a software innovation has presented him with an opportunity to develop a "smart" wheelchair that would utilize certain principles employed in the robot project for advanced directional programming.

Several questions need to be resolved fairly early in the project. The Investigator obtains the help of the Transfer Officer, colleagues, and the Center Director in seeking answers.

The questions are:

1. Transfer Officer: In working toward this product, what advantages and disadvantages may result from entering into an early Cooperative R & D Agreement with a manufcaturer? How should dialogue proceed?

2. Colleagues: What is the potential market for a wheelchair of this type? What are the probable limits on its cost to consumers? Are there existing devices or products which would need to be considered in developing this product?

3. Director: What are the proprietary interests of others who developed some of the components that would be used in the wheelchair, and to what extent can the use of these components affect exclusive licensing?
