Example 1

You anticipate an advance in knowledge as a result of research in an area that has not yet been fully explored. If it is successful, the work will shed new light on a persistent rehabilitation problem. It is highly likely that this work would be a direct outgrowth of previous research and could lead to a technical paper or report.

In this situation it is unlikely that early discussion with the Transfer Officer would be useful unless discussions with the Center Director suggest otherwise.

Example 2

Some previous research has indicated to you that new technology could be used to facilitate the lifting and turning of patients. The idea being considered would result in an adjustable, inexpensive device that would attach to beds. The idea is unique and could be widely used.

In this situation it would very appropriate to discuss the idea with the Transfer Officer at the earliest opportunity since transfer of a product would be an eventual goal of a new development project.
