Research on Playful Science
We draw from prior research on learning in science, in the family, and in everyday life settings.
In our research and design efforts, we ask…
- How do we design casual family science experiences that can support families in valuing and engaging in curiosity, inquiry, and active investigation in everyday life? We seek to understand when and how such experiences foster different kinds of activity and conversation.
- Further, we ask how such experiences contribute to families’ understandings of science and their confidence to engage in it.
We work with families as partners in the research and use a variety of methods:
- We video-record families in activity and do in-depth analysis of their conversation and interactions
- We offer ways that families can document and describe their own learning (e.g., creating photo galleries)
- We interview parents and children about their activity and conversations
