  • The Heilshorn lab bid farewell to post-docs Abby Foster and Laura Marquardt. Abby accepted a position at Genentech in South San Francisco and Laura accepted a position at Sigma Aldrich in St. Louis. We wish them the best!

  • The Heilshorn Lab goes to New England! Sarah was the Vice Chair of the Signal Transduction by Engineering Extracellular Matrices Gordan Research Conference (STEEM GRC) in Biddeford, ME.
    • Ruby, Huiyuan, Laura, Chris M. and Matt all presented posters at the STEEM GRC.
    • Chris M. co-chaired the STEEM Gordan Research Seminar and won a best poster award!
  • Sarah hosted a baby shower for Abby! Many games were played, and baby Foster received plenty of hand-customized onesies from fellow lab members.
  • Anthony Tabet, from the University of Minnesota and Audrey Zhu from Stanford joined the Heilshorn lab as undergraduate researchers for the summer. Welcome!
  • Bryan Nase, a local teacher, has joined the Heilshorn lab as part of the IISME program. Bryan is a biology teacher at Westmoor High School. Welcome, Bryan!
  • Blanca Jaime has joined the lab as a RISE high school intern. Blanca is a rising senior, and we look forward to working with her!
  • Huiyuan will be spending the summer in Rochester, NY as an intern with Kodak Research Laboratories.

    • Sarah Heilshorn presented a seminar at the University of California Santa Barbara for their Center for Bioengineering.
    • Huiyuan Wang has received a travel grant from the Area of Advance in Materials Science at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. This will support Huiyuan during a 2.5-month research visit to Prof. Annika Enejder's laboratory over the summer quarter. During her visit, Huiyuan will work on a research project entitled "Exploring the Microstructure of Thermo-responsive ELP Hydrogels using CARS microscopy".
    • Cong Dinh, an undergraduate in the lab, will be matriculating at UCSD for their M.D.-Ph.D. program this Fall! Congrats, Cong!

    • Sarah Heilshorn was co-organizer and Huiyuan Wang was the student assistant for a symposium on peptide-based materials at the Materials Research Society meeting.
    • Lei Cai presented his research at the Materials Research Society meeting.
    • Karen Dubbin won a poster prize and Sarah Heilshorn gave a talk at the Drexel University Symposium on Engineering Complex Tissues in Philadelphia.
    • Sarah Heilshorn presented a seminar to the NanoBioMatter Program at the University of Stuttgart in Germany.
    • Cong Dinh presented a talk and Shamik Mascharak won a poster prize at the Society for Biomaterials Conference in Charlotte, NC. Shamik was also presented with the C. William Hall Fellowship at the conference. One student is selected nationally each year for this honor based on excellence of undergraduate research.
    • Huiyuan Wang had a manuscript accepted to the journal Advanced Materials.
    • Shamik Mascharak, an undergraduate in the lab, received the Terman Award for academic excellence from the Stanford School of Engineering.

    MAR

    • The group welcomes two new PhD students: Daniel Hunt from Chemical Engineering and Chris Lindsay from Materials Science & Engineering.
    • Dr. Abbygail Foster joined the lab as a new postdoctoral fellow. Abby completed her PhD at the University of Delaware working with Prof. Millicent Sullivan on gene delivery. Abbygail will focus on protein-engineered hydrogels for gene delivery and cell transplantation.
    • Christopher Madl was selected to attend the 65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau, Germany. Additionally, Christopher was also awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein NIH NRSA Predoctoral Fellowship through the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). Congratulations Christopher!
    • Chris Madl had a manuscript accepted to the journal Neural Regeneration Research.
    • Meghaan Smith and Ruby Dewi had a manuscript accepted to the journal Integrative Biology.

    • Laura Marquardt, PhD from Washington University, has joined the lab as a new postdoc. Laura was awarded a GLAM Postdoctoral Fellowship to support her research. She will focus on the design of new biomaterials for spinal cord injury in collaboration with Prof. Giles Plant in Neurosurgery.
    • Laura was selected for a Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials Postdoctoral Fellowship, which will provide support for her postdoctoral research. Congratulations Laura!
    • Sarah Heilshorn presented a seminar to the Biomedical Engineering Department at Oregon Health & Science University.
