Gabriela Suarez Mier's Biographical Sketch

Gabriela grew up in Mexico City, but has spent a significant part of her life (about a third) living in the US. She studied veterinary medicine at the National Autonomous University in Mexico City, where she focused on equine general medicine. Afterwards, she spent 4 months at UC Davis rotating through the equine hospital. Gabriela then rotated in two private hospitals in California: Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center and San Luis Rey and ended up in a one year internship at Alamo. At Alamo, she worked with two very talented equine internists and realized that she loved equine internal medicine. Gabriela became interested in internal medicine and critical care of horses. She then went on to do a residency in large animal internal medicine at the University of Florida, where she took care of a diverse variety of large animals with different medical disorders: from septic foals and calves and goats with respiratory problems to horses with severe neurologic disorders to llamas with heat stress. The neurologic cases fascinated her the most. Gabriela wanted to understand the underlying mechanisms of these diseases, which is why  she decided to pursue a PhD in Neuroscience at Stanford.
