Summer Program
Program Dates: June 20, 2024–Aug 7, 2024

To qualify for admission, an applicant must (1) demonstrate a clear intent to pursue a professional or academic career requiring the use of Japanese; and (2) have successfully completed two to three years of college-level instruction. In terms of actual language proficiency, successful applicants are expected to have a solid foundation in the fundamental structures of Japanese, to have mastered both kana syllabaries, and to be able to read and write approximately 500–700 kanji.

Note that enrollment in the Center Summer Program is limited and admission is competitive; if there is a large number of applicants, it may not be possible to admit all qualified individuals.

Admission Notes:

1. Admission decisions will be announced by email no later than April 1. Students selected as alternates for admission will be notified whether they will be admitted by May 7. If an alternate has not heard from the Yokohama office by May 7, it will mean that he or she has not been admitted.

2. A signed letter of agreement of attendance must be returned to the Stanford office by April 19.

3. Any admitted applicant who decides not to enroll in the program should immediately notify both the Yokohama office and the Stanford office.

4. After the application period, any questions regarding attendance should be sent to the Yokohama office via email at summer@iucjapan.org.

5. Students who require a visa to enter Japan should contact a Japanese Embassy or Consulate directly. If proof of admission to the IUC is required, please contact the Yokohama office by email.

6. Please be aware that housing arrangements are the personal responsibility of each student. Information about how to locate and reserve housing, including a short list of recommended accommodations, is provided by the Yokohama office in mid-May to all successful applicants who have agreed to attend.

Tuition for the 2024 summer program is US $5,200. Students currently enrolled in a degree granting program at an IUC member institution or who graduated from a member institution during the 2023–24 academic year will receive a guaranteed tuition scholarship of $600 to attend the Inter-University Center Summer 2024 program. Fees are subject to change.

Note: IUC scholarships other than that noted above are not available for the summer program.

No email or paper submissions will be accepted. Only completed applications including the application fee payment will be considered.

Documents 1 and 2 must be downloaded from the IUC web site, and 5 (application fee) must be paid by credit card through IUC’s secure online payment portal.

Please forward this form to your language evaluator to complete and upload to your application in Interfolio. The evaluator is welcome to submit a letter of recommendation in addition to the completed form.
