BAUGHMAN FAMILY

family tree

My grandmother Ella Baughman married William Ritter in Kosciusko County, Indiana in 1888. She was the daughter of Daniel Baughman (1847-1939), the granddaugther of Jacob Baughman (1805-1869), the great granddaughter of Isiaah Baughman (1781-1870) and the gr gr grandaughter of Henry Baughman (1759-1850). Henry became one of the first judges in Columbiana County, Ohio when it was formed in 1803. Henry had served in the revolution, as had his brother George, who also moved to Ohio. Henry has long been believed to be the grandson of Johann Georg Bachman (aka John George or just George), a Swiss Mennonite who had immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1717 after living in exile in the Palantinate of Germany. However y-chromosome DNA tests suggest that Henry was not a natural descendant of Johann Georg (discussion of the y-chromosome results). Henry's wife, Esther Bachman has been confirmed through Bible records to have been a grandchild of Johann Georg, so whether Henry married his first cousin or not, we are descended from Johann Georg, who settled in Upper Saucon Township in what is now Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Sue Phillips, a descendant of Henry's putative brother George, has a very nice website with information about these families at http://www.phillipsplace.net/genealogy/surnames/bachman.html

I've focused my research on the descendants of Henry and especially his oldest son Isaiah. I haven't finished preparing my Baughman database for access online yet. An older, incomplete database of mine, with a number of errors, is still available at Rootsweb WorldConnect database g910

Isaiah's grave

Daniel's grandfather was Isaiah Baughman (aka Jesse) who settled in Brown township is what later became Carroll County, Ohio. Isaiah is buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery in that township. (click on picture for larger image).
