Manufacturer-oriented activities

Potential manufacturers of the product are critical to its availability in the marketplace. The operational Interaction Model that was displayed previously (see page 27) shows some ways that they can be effectively involved.

Here are some suggestions about involving potential manufacturers in the process at times when transferability can be influenced.

Planning

• Ask what their consumers are telling them about "critical needs."
• Find out what types of products are most "in demand."
• Ask about technical areas in which they are interested but not self-sufficient.

Product design

• Consult with the industrial designer(s) in the company.
• Utilize components that are part of the company's line.
• Clarify specific quality control standards that must be met.

Prototype test

• Ask how the company would market the product
• Ask what the time frame would be to bring the product to market.
