Joint Replacement

Investigator: Gary S. Beaupré, PhD

Project Category: Arthritis - 2000

Objective: Increase longevity of orthopaedic implants.

Approach:

  • Study implant design features such as the proximal femoral collar.
  • Examine the effect of different designs on implant fixation and long-term bone maintenance.
  • Develop computational models to examine how different collar geometries affect stress transfer and micromotion adjacent to an implant.
  • Improve force and stress transfer between implant and bone.

Status: Our computational modeld suggest that distinct advantages exist to a conical collar that should increase hip replacement longevity. Research into arthritis prevention and treatment is critical for reducing the cost to society related to arthritis and improving the quality of life for again veterans and non-veterans alike.
