Rivalry of the Chinese Scripts: Simplification and Politics

Date: Feb 29, 2008 (Friday)

Time: 4pm

Location: Room 113, Building 260 in Main Quad

Speaker: Prof. Chaofen Sun, Director of Center for East Asian Studies at Stanford

Seminar Abstract: With the simplified characters adopted as the Chinese orthography in China and Singapore, and the complexed characters in Taiwan and Hong Kong, the Chinese people essentially have to live with two standard scripts. I will, first of all, briefly review the history of the Chinese written form, how it changed over time in the last two millennia. Qinzhuan, a change from Jinwen, was standardized by Qinshihuang to be the script used by the newly founded Empire. Clerical script, Lishu adopted by the Han Empire, was essentially a simplification of the zhuanshu, in accord with Xu Shen. Then, Kaishu emerged after the downfall of the Han Empire. Simplified characters were successfully standardized in the first ten years of the People's Republic. But the focus will be on its developments in the 20th century, the Guoyu yundong (National language movement) in Late Qing, May 4th movement, the first standardization attempt of the popular characters in the 1930, the standardization of the simplified characters in the 1950s, and the failure of further simplification in the 1970s, etc. A view on the underlying reasons for all these changes will be presented, and an attempt will be made to answer to the question: which script is more Chinese?
