Photodisintegration of polarized 3He using a circularly polarized photon beam

Abstract: Since the discovery of the lightest quarks at SLAC in late 60s and the first observation of gluons in late 70s, the understanding of the structure of nucleon and nuclei in terms of quarks and gluons has been a subject of intense experimental and theoretical work. While these efforts are still ongoing, another question about the spin structure of the nucleon and nuclei arose in late 80s due to the discovery that quarks inside proton contribute only about a quarter to its total spin. Recent advances in high intensity polarized beams and polarized targets allow for tests of new spin-dependent observables and spin sum rules of nucleons and light nuclei.

In this talk, I will review the experimental work on the photodisintegration of 3He below pion production threshold using a circularly polarized γ-beam and a longitudinally polarized 3He target. Spin-dependent cross sections will be presented and will be compared with the state-of-the-art phenomenological three-body calculations. Their implications for the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule on 3He will be also discussed.
