OK Science and Not-OK Science: What is the Difference?

Abstract: Most scientists work in recognized and respected fields. They are engaged in what we might call "OK science." It is possible to get federal grants to support such research, and to get the results of this research published in one of a number of journals. However, scientists who wish to study topics such as parapsychology or UFOs will have great difficulty in getting any supportÑfinancial, institutional, or moral. Their activity is typically not regarded as "real science." Such research may be categorized, for convenience, as "Not-OK science." What is the difference? Is there a difference? These questions are the topic of this talk.

Bio: Peter A. Sturrock, Emeritus Professor of Applied Physics at Stanford University , has received a number of awards for his scientific research, and was the Founding President of the Society for Scientific Exploration.
