Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging modality that has the powerful capability to non-invasively interrogate cellular and molecular processes occurring deep within the tissue of living subjects. However, advanced image reconstruction methods require more computation than is available in a typical clinical setting. Hence, the goal of Guillem’s work has been to accelerate the reconstruction by an order-of-magnitude by using off-the-shelf graphics processing units (GPUs) as cost-effective high performance co-processors. This technology will enable the use of advanced reconstruction methods that improve the accuracy of the scans, resulting in more reliable diagnosis.
