Musculoskeletal modeling and simulation tools are powerful resources for both basic research and clinical applications. However, current models incorporate a major simplification by representing muscles as single lines following the effective line of action. In Edith’s research, she will develop a modeling pipeline that incorporates diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging to create three-dimensional finite element models of muscle representing the geometry and architecture of muscle fibers. These models will be used to explore the functional implications of altered muscle architecture and to simulate surgical treatments designed to treat movement abnormalities.
