Human Subjects in Research
B. Jenny Kiratli, PhD
Spinal Cord Injury Service
VA Palo Alto Health Care System

Abstract: This talk will provide an introduction to the process and principles related to involvement of humans as subjects in research. Specifically, Dr Kiratli will provide: i) a very brief overview of the history of human research before regulation and the development of the guiding principles that remain in use today, ii) detailed presentation of the three guiding principles, iii) the process of obtaining permission (specifically at Stanford) for research with humans, and iv) some current and controversial issues related to human research, with particular attention to persons with disabilities. The presentation will be primarily didactic but discussion is encouraged.

Biosketch: Dr Kiratli is the Director of Clinical Research in the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Center, VA Palo Alto Health System. She has over 20 years experience conducting research with individuals with SCI on a broad spectrum of clinical topics including osteoporosis, cardiovascular risk, telemedicine, nutrition, and upper extremity function. She served on the Stanford Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the protection of human subjects in research for 8 years (1999-2007) and currently serves on the VA Central IRB; a new panel that is pioneering the process of oversight of multi-center projects across the VA system. Dr Kiratli has an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Stanford Department of Orthopaedic Surgery (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Division) and is affiliated with the new Stanford Program for Spinal Cord Injury Repair currently under development in the Stanford Institute for Neuro-innovation and Translational Neuroscience.
