Carlos obtained his BSc in Biology from the University of Málaga (Spain), and then moved to the University of Exeter (UK) for his PhD in Quantitative Biology with Prof. Robert Beardmore. Here, he focused on the adaptation of Escherichia coli to antibiotics as a function of drug concentration, and spatial organisation by combining mathematical modelling, experimental evolution, molecular biology, and algorithm development. To study the relationship between spatial organisation of E. coli and emergence of resistant mutants, he co-developed a device to track the the growth of bacteria on Petri dishes, technology that he would later use to develop the light modulator (LIMO®) alongside Profs. Robert Beardmore and Ivana Gudelj.

At Stanford, he will help develop an affordable, point-of-care milifluidic diagnostic device, suitable for mass production, to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in biological samples. He hopes to apply the same technology to other pathogens to develop rapid diagnostic assays.
