From Messy Data to Elegant Graphics: A Demonstration with R
When: Tuesday, May 14, 3:15-4:15
Where: Green Library, East Wing, First Floor -- Information Center (IC) Instruction Room 166 (look for the sign near the IC Desk)
This talk will demonstrate the use of R for data cleaning and transformation (aka data munging/hacking), and producing elegant graphics using several example data sets. The first half of the demonstration will focus on the stringr package for cleaning, reshape and plyr for data munging and transformation and if time allows, the use of the JSONIO and XML packages to extract useful data from non-rectangular formats. The second half will focus on the use of the ggplot2 package for visualization, with particular attention to the use of multipanels (aka, facets, small multiples, trellis graphics). The talk is designed in large part to provide an example of an efficient analytic workflow using R. Attendees should not worry about following along---all code will be posted online following the talk.
