Weeding Procedures in General

Removing an entire title

  1. All volumes are  removed.

Not all volumes are on the shelf?

Procedure:

  • Check with librarian in case it’s on their desk.
  •  If not, mark WITHDRAWN
  • Add comment note: nos, weeding project, date, initials

2.  All volumes should be WITHDRAWN. No other work needs to be done on the call number. No need to delete volumes from the catalog.

3. Delete the  MHLD

4. Check for open serial control. If found, print out the record and put in Camelia’s box

5. Check for open order line (2012). If found, see if the title is currently updated (i.e. 2010- receipts). If it is, please refer to Erika. If it is not, just email the record number to Annie.

Removing only some volumes from a title

  1. Read the directions and remove only those volumes that are identified by the librarian.
  2. Change the MHLD to reflect the decision made. Example: Library has latest x years only.  866 should be coded 41 if we are keeping specific volumes. Example:  866 41 1947-1952. If we are keeping latest x years only, delete the 866.
  3. If decision was made to retain latest x years only, print out and give to Camelia to change the serial control.

Statistics

Paul wants to be able to tell the dean how many volumes we have removed as part of this process. Accordingly please note weeding discards separately from others you might have done as part of Transfers, for example.
