Maurice Sendak has died at age 83

Maurice Sendak

Maurice Sendak, author and illustrator of 1963's Where the Wild Things Are and 2011's Bumble-Ardy, has died at age 83. The New York Times has a good obituary that addresses Sendak's "splendid nightmares."

Family Business and Sustainability

Mr. Tsao will address the intersection of family and business in the developing world. As Chairman of a family-owned multinational corporation, he is interested in the peculiar challenges faced by family-owned businesses and the role of such businesses in promoting development. He is particularly concerned with the destabilizing effects of rapid economic growth on traditional social structures. Mr. Tsao will discuss recent efforts to promote development while preserving family, social, and cultural harmony.

IT Open House this Wednesday

IT Open House 2012

"IT's in the Cloud" is the theme of this year's IT Open House. More than 70 Stanford exhibitors and over 20 technology vendors will be on hand to talk with from 10:00 to 2:00 and an array of free talks, classes, discussions, and vendor presentations will acquaint you with Stanford and vendor initiatives. A prize raffle will put a silver lining on this cloud, with drawings at 11:00, 12:30 (for the Grand Prize), and 1:45. Finally, starting at 2:00 p.m., featured Stanford presenters John Mitchell, Professor of Computer Science and chair of the new faculty committee on educational technology, and Guru Parulkar, Executive Director of the Open Networking Research Center will speak about technology futures.
