Data Visualization: Growth of Newspapers Across the U.S.: 1690-2011

Data visualization of U.S. weekly newspapers in 2010, in white

The Bill Lane Center for the American West's Rural West Initiative has just posted a fascinating data visualization of more than 300 years of newspaper publication in the United States. The data in the visualization come from the Library of Congress' Chronicling America project, which, according to its web page, is a "long-term effort to develop an Internet-based, searchable database of U.S. newspapers with descriptive information and select digitization of historic pages." The Rural West Initiative has taken the 140,000 publications in the Chronicling America database and plotted them over time—from 1690 (one title) to 2011 (13,670 titles)—and over space as the nation expanded westward.

incredible resource

I wonder if we could link to the newspapers we have digital access to?
