The UK's National Archives has made available online Margaret Thatcher's prime ministerial files from her first year in power. The 130 files, which date from May to December 1979, are available for free and are fully searchable by keyword.
From the site's Introduction:
These records cover the Conservative administration of Margaret Thatcher who came to power in May 1979, and was succeeded by John Major in 1990. At present these records extend to December 1979; it is hoped to digitise further releases of records as they are transferred to The National Archives and opened under the 30 year rule.
1979 was a significant year in modern British history for two main reasons: the ‘Winter of Discontent’, and the arrival at No 10 Downing Street of Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s first female Prime Minister.
