From Andrew Herkovic, Director of Communication and Development for Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources:
The coffee kiosk between Green and Meyer Libraries is currently being renovated, and will open for business in January 2010. Both the Libraries and the incoming operator, Coupa Café, had hoped the construction would be completed in time for the start of Fall Quarter. However, the permitting process revealed that certain features of the kiosk, including its plumbing and electrical installations, had become non-compliant with local codes due to code changes that occurred after the original equipping of the structure in 1999. A more extensive renovation plan has now been developed and submitted to the county.
University Librarian Mike Keller was philosophical about this delay: “Of course we would have liked the kiosk to come online this month, but we have to play within the rules and roll with the punches.” He added that the eventual service will be worth the wait.
Coupa Café owner Jean Paul Coupal emphasized that the facility was in need of significant upgrades: “We knew we’d have our work cut out for us bringing the kiosk up to speed, to make it workable for food service. Lots of work needs to be done to the kiosk in order to bring it up to current health code standards. At this point, we are very confident all will be put to rights by the start of the Winter Quarter.”
