half-life

The amount of times it takes for half of the original sample of a substance to be chemically degraded or eliminated in some other way (for example, in the urine). For example, if the half life of a compound is 5 hours, there will be 50% left at 5 hours, 25% of the original amount left at 10 hours, and 12.5% left after 15 hours.
