Major Research Projects:

The Designing Education Lab has worked on four main projects. They are: the Carnegie Preparation for the Professions Project (PPP), the Academic Pathways Study (APS), the Engineering Pathways Study (EPS), and research within the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation (Epicenter). The Carnegie PPP studied models of undergraduate engineering education across the U.S. The Academic Pathways Study (2003-2010) investigated why students choose to stay in or leave engineering programs. EPS (2010-present) investigates the career paths of recent engineering graduates. And finally, our work with Epicenter (2011-present) investigates what role entrepreneurship can play in engineering education.

NSF Funded Projects

The Stanford Designing Education Lab is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded laboratory aimed at conducting research to improve engineering education at the undergraduate level. Currently holding over $1,000,000 in NSF funding, we work on projects to investigate the undergraduate engineering experience, how recent graduates transition into the workforce, how entrepreneurship can play a role in engineering education, and more. Our ultimate goal is to help create engineers prepared to tackle our world’s increasingly complex problems. As part of our mission, Stanford DEL wants to share what we have learned to better improve engineering education everywhere.
