Joe is a visiting scholar on sabbatical from Bucknell University, where he helped start the Biomedical Engineering Department and teaches classes in Medical Device Design and Signals and Systems. Within the field of biomedical engineering Joe was the founder and inaugural chair of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Undergraduate Research Track, co-chair of the Body-Of-Knowledge taskforce, and is currently the chair-elect of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Biomedical Engineering Division (BED). He co-founded the KEEN Winter Interdisciplinary Design Experience and is a core faculty member of the Bucknell Institute for Leadership in Technology and Management. Joe is a 2012 NAE Frontiers of Engineering Education faculty member and the 2011 recipient of the ASEE BED Teaching Award.
Joe's technical research focuses on theoretical and computational electrophysiology of the heart and brain. He has author two textbooks, Quantitative Electrophysiology and Matlab for Engineering and the Life Sciences and is a member of BMES, ASEE, Sigma Xi, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the American Physical Society and Phi Beta Kappa.
