A Sustainable Strategy for Osa, Costa Rica
A world treasure of biological and cultural diversity, the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica faces threats from rapid growth and commercialization. With funding from the Woods Institute for the environment, an interdisciplinary, inter-school team of Stanford scientists are working with a parallel team in Costa Rica to formulate a 30-year sustainability strategy for the Osa. Areas of research and planning include land use change, agriculture, health, education, tourism, infrastructure development, and conservation. Co-directed by Bill Durham and Rodolfo Dirzo in Biology, research and fieldwork in the Osa seeks to create a long-term strategic plan for human development and conservation in the region.
