I had taken over the dinner announcements (from Paul Asente, who used fabulous themes), and I tried a few themes. Inspired by a straight club that danced in a school cafeteria, where people wrote humorous Spam dishes on the menu board, I started using various appropriate kinds of Spam that might be served in various restaurants. I also diverged into holiday songs ("Bring us some spammy pudding") and topical headlines (Tonya Harding's Spam shoelaces and so on). I started getting Spam postcards and clippings of spam cartoons. Then Mark Lentczner, who does publicity for a weekly Mountain View coffee & social group nearby, used the "Tra La, It's May" theme. I was inspired to go whole hog in an idea I had been playing with. It had started as a minor theme, with random snippets of lyrics, and by the end of May it had developed into a full-fledged filk musical that ran all summer.
