Home I-V instructions
Check with your doctor and Home Care Professional for changes to these instructions.  These are based on experience with home IV done in 1996.  Send email if you have additional questions.

Start by removing the antibiotic packet from the refrigerator so it can be warming. Do this about 1 hour in advance if possible.
Tray preparation: (up to 8 hrs before I-V), see figure

q 1. Wash hands with liquid anti-bacterial soap; turn off taps with elbows, dry with paper towels.

q 2. Arrange on clean tray covered with paper towels:

q 3 syringes

q 3 blunt needles

q 1 "clip"

q 1 bottle of saline

q 1 bottle of heparin

q alcohol wipes.

q 3. Clean vial top with alcohol swab, then draw up 5 cc of saline, clear bubbles, replace sharp needle with blunt needle, push 2 drops out of blunt end, recap.

q 4. Repeat with second syringe.

q 5. Clean vial top with alcohol swab, then draw up 2 cc of heparin, clear bubbles, replace sharp needle with blunt needle, push 2 drops out of blunt end, recap. Put tape on heparin syringe as a marker.

q 6. Put antibiotic packet into dispenser and screw all the way down. Be sure to check label on packet.

Starting I-V
q 1. Wash hands with liquid anti-bacterial soap; turn off taps with elbows, dry with paper towels.

q 2. Clean rubber end of I-V line into person with alcohol swab for 30 sec.

q 3. Uncap blunt needle of 5 cc saline syringe, insert into cleaned end of I-V line, unclamp I-V line, and flush line with pulsing movements of syringe plunger.

q 4. Clamp I-V line while still pushing last bit of saline in. Withdraw and discard syringe in sharps box. Make sure end of I-V line into patient touches nothing--wipe again for 30 sec if it does.

q 5. Attach "clip" to end of antibiotic line from the dispenser. Carefully open thumb clamp on antibiotic line and let antibiotic move to tip. Re-clamp and then insert into I-V line going into person.

q 6. Open both clamps and allow I-V to begin. Small bubbles in junction may be unavoidable and usually will not move.

q 7. Set timer for 30 minutes (or whatever is appropriate).

Finishing I-V
q Wash hands with liquid anti-bacterial soap; turn off taps with elbows, dry with paper towels.

q When blue spot appears on glass port, clamp both I-V lines.

q Remove "clip" from person's I-V port.

q Wipe port with alcohol swab, push 2 drops of saline from blunt needle, insert in port and flush tubing as before with 5 cc of saline.

q Push at least 2 drops of heparin from blunt needle and insert into I-V port. Flush line with 2 cc of heparin. With about 1 cc left in syringe, position fingers and thumb to push clamp closed, and then clamp line with one hand while still applying positive pressure to heparin syringe. Withdraw syringe with some heparin still inside--it will spritz if you've done it correctly.
