Climate impacts from greenhouse gas emissions are relatively well understood. However, the potential impacts of aviation emissions on climate are unique since most of the emissions occur at altitudes where other anthropogenic sources are absent. The impacts of aviation on stratospheric ozone and radiative forcing from CO2, NOx, persistent contrails, and aviation-induced cirrus clouds may be significant. There are large uncertainties in relating aviation emissions to changes in radiative forcing or surface temperature, especially for contrail-associated pathways.
My interest is in reducing the uncertainty in these issues, and in particular the uncertainty of aiviation-induced cloud effects.
